Mark Holthouse, MD
After 19 years of practicing traditional, western medicine, a few things have become rather obvious. Things like broken bones, lacerations, trauma, heart attacks, are taken care of quite nicely by traditional medicine. The problem is that 80% of diseases are not caused by acute trauma, but chronic poor life style , toxins, stress, inactivity, and our genetics.
Prevention of disease is not the mere absence of illness, nor is prevention limited to the early detection of diseases… like doing mammograms, PSAs, EKGs, Stress tests, and Colonoscopy. True prevention uses the symptoms people begin seeing pop up early on as clues as to where we need to look for issues long before they show up on these screening tests.
Now more than ever our country must deal with diseases like the management of weight, sleep issues, cholesterol, heart disease, depression, arthritis, cancer, metabolic syndrome, headaches, stress, digestion, chronic fatigue, using a different model than that used for acute crisis management. The old model is thought to be responsible for the United States current ranking amongst the lowest of all nations for health care yet we spend more than any government on health. Functional Medicine offers a new model emphasizing the need to find the cause of dis-eases using an organized, scientifically sound approach to chronic illnesses largely caused by poor life style. One size does not fit all when it comes to medical care. We leave crisis management to the Emergency Rooms where it belongs and are dedicated to sending them less business through better care of the illnesses listed above.
I would be honored to serve you in your quest to optimize health and live a long and quality life reaching your body’s highest potential for well being.
